For My Grandpa Doug

I didn’t know you for very long, but somehow, the time we had was enough… Because our blood connection was strong, and anything is possible with some love. I remember the first time I called you, I was going through a tough time, I didn’t know who else to talk to and you came through on the line. Complete strangers, we had never met – only knew each other’s names. But your voice I’ll never forget, how it made me feel more sane. Because you and I were connected by a mysterious force of nature that consumed our brains in ways we couldn’t explain, that made even our own selves, at times, feel like strangers. The label is insignificant, yet the diagnosis means the world – to not know yourself is a detriment, but to also have your vision blurred by something that makes you who you are, that gives you some of your best qualities… but at the same time makes life so hard, and can turn you into a poisonous anomaly. Brought upon us by a faceless God, who (I hope) knows more than we ever could, I’d like to believe he scorched us in the name of love, knowing it would one day do us good. Whatever the reason, we’ll never be able to explain all the acts of treason happening within our brains. And so, because of you, I am cursed. But, because of you, I am blessed. Because of you, I feel my worst, and because of you, I am my best. Because of you I am me. Independent, smart, creative, and strong. Because of you I have the genes that help me make words into song. And while I pray each day that this curse could go away, and that there could be an easy way out… I know in my heart that the sun always lays behind the darkness of the clouds.
